Advancements in Laser-Scanned Capsule Endoscopy
Onur Ferhanoğlu, PhD Istanbul Technical University
About the Seminar: Traditional endoscopes and colonoscopes have their limitations, as they are tethered and inconvenient in multiple ways for the patient. Contrastingly, the capsule endoscope approach allows comprehensive imaging of the entire gastrointestinal tract with the simple act of swallowing a pill. Over the past three years, we've developed the laser-scanned capsule endoscope, which offers high-resolution, multi-layered imaging. This presentation delves into the optical architecture and multi-actuator design of our innovative capsule endoscope. Further, the talk elucidates conformal antenna designs facilitating image transmission to external acquisition units. I'll conclude by exploring the exciting potential of synchronized multi-capsules performing simultaneous diagnostic and therapeutic functions.
About the Speaker: Onur Ferhanoğlu earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University in 2003 and 2005. Subsequently, he embarked on his research journey at Koç University, focusing on the development of MEMS thermal imaging sensors. Moving on to a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin between 2011 and 2014, Dr. Ferhanoğlu played an instrumental role in crafting an ultrafast laser microsurgery scalpel. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University. His research agenda encompasses Biomedical Optics and MEMS, earning him the distinguished IEEE Turkey Research Encouragement Award in 2019.
