Biomechanics is an applied mechanics field. It is the science that examines forces acting upon and within a biological structure and effects produced by such forces.

Forces cause deformation and motion for any mechanical structure. In addition, they cause biological changes in tissue structure for a biological structure.

Therefore, biomechanical research studies

  (1) Motion of different body segments and factors that effect the motion,

  (2) Deformation of biological structures and

  (3) Biological effects of locally acting forces on living tissue including growth and development, adaptation or overload and injuries.

BME Biomechanics group works on several aspects of bodily motion and causes and treatment of pathological motion with a particular emphasis on the neuro-musculo-skeletal system. The group specializes in skeletal muscle mechanics, develops new theoretical viewpoints on force and movement production mechanisms of skeletal muscle in health and disease.

We use a wide range of methodologies including animal experiments, finite element modeling, agent based modeling, magnetic resonance imaging, human experiments during orthopedic surgery, motion analysis, histology, atomic force microscopy and mechanical testing of tissue samples.

BME Biomechanics group conducts competitive and state of the art research studies, publishes in major journals of the field and attends key conferences regularly.
